Lily Mindich is a representational painter living and working in Chicago, IL. The figures in her paintings are on the brink of an emotional realization; they are caught just before a plant falls, a door opens or a sink is turned on. Her subjects are often women confined to small, shallow spaces or somehow cut off from the viewer. However, they elicit empathy through the strength and honesty of their gazes. Recently Mindich has been working on smaller paintings that act as footnotes to her larger ones, bringing their potential outcomes to fruition or emphasizing a quiet detail. She knits bold, distinct cells of color together to form vivid narratives when viewed from a distance. But when viewed close up, her figures dissipate into abstract patterns. Lily Mindich received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016 and has exhibited at galleries throughout the U.S. and Europe, most notably Sullivan Galleries in Chicago, Ice House Gallery in Evanston, IL, Dillon Gallery in Madison, WI and the International Centre for the Arts in Monte Castello di Vibio, Italy.
